Pier did speak English (she’s been in American movies, even), though she did have a thick accent. She probably had a bit of broken English going on, but she learned it when she came to the States.
There was a quote I read where James Dean said that he actually tried to learn German so that he could argue with Ursula Andress (Swiss/German) in another language…oh him.
